It’s already March, and with St. Patrick’s Day right around the corner we are going to be seeing a lot of green. One thing that is green that will be glowing all year is your building’s photoluminescent egress path marking systems and exit signs.

Photoluminescent (PL) egress path markings and exit signs are a big part of a building’s fire and life safety system. It creates an outline of steps, landings, handrails and any other obstacles that would be difficult to see in smoky or blackout conditions. In fact, in the event of a fire, smoke can quickly fill hallways and stairwells, making it almost impossible to navigate without tripping or bumping into something. Not to mention, the inhalation of smoke can cause occupants to become disoriented and unsure of which way to head towards safety. This can cause them to become stuck in a bad situation that could lead to injuries or even death.

Luckily, photoluminescent egress path markers and exit signs help light the quickest and safest path out of harm’s way. It is made of quality material that is engineered to last the lifespan of your facility. And unlike electrically wired lighting and signs, PL doesn’t need power, batteries, or bulbs in order to glow, which all have to be continuously tested and replaced. Instead, it uses sunlight or recycles existing electrical light, which can save facility managers thousands of dollars over time. Because photoluminescent markings and exit signs store energy from the building’s ambient lighting, it allows a building to have continuous visual support up to 48 hours in blackout or smoky conditions. That allows plenty of time for people to evacuate, especially in high rise facilities.

Other Benefits to Using Photoluminescence:

  • Meets requirements for codes and standards in existing and new buildings
  • PL exit signs can contribute to LEED Credits
  • Non-toxic or radioactive
